Want to borrow something that we don't have?

Interlibrary loans are transactions in which library materials are made available from one library to another upon request.  An interlibrary loan is defined as a transaction in which the material moves from library to library.

The Dolton Public Library District will offer Interlibrary Loan (ILL) to persons presenting their valid System-wide borrowing card which has no delinquencies.  There are routinely no fees charged for ILL service, but charges incurred by the library will be passed on to the patron.

As a borrowing library:

  • Dolton Public Library District will use ILL when requested materials are not available in our collection.
  • Requests for new materials will first be considered for purchase.  If materials are not purchased, the requsts will be sent through ILL.
  • If patron requests rush service, Library Staff will place a hold and call a lending library for materials.
  • The Dolton Library Staff will not request any format or class of materials which the Dolton Library is not ready to lend.
  • Library Staff will promptly pursue overdue materials in accordance with Suburban Library System's ILL policy.
  • Library Staff will retain records of book request for a period of 1 year and periodical request for five years.

As a lending library:

  • Library Staff will process all request for materials within 2 working days.
  • All materials except Reference books will be loaned through ILL.
  • Dolton Library will not honor requests for materials which have been added to Dolton's collection within the last month and which have had less than 2 circulations.
  • Complete issues of magazines will be sent in response to an ILL request for the whole issue.
  • Library Staff will promptly notify borrowing libraries when materials ar not available.
  • Dolton Library provies ILL service without costs to the borrowing library.
  • Library Staff promptly issues overdue notices in accordance with Suburban Library System's ILL policy.
  • Charges for lost materials will be the price quoted in the SWAN database plus a processing fee of $5.00 on materials costing less than $10.00, and a fee of $10.00 on materials costing $10.00 or more.

"Every artist wants his work to be permanent. But what is? The Aswan Dam covered some of the greatest art in the world. Venice is sinking. Great books and pictures were lost in the Florence floods. In the meantime we still enjoy butterflies."
